Our blog post this month is provided by Rae-Leigh MacInnes, RMT, Reiki Master/ Teacher.
As a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT), I’m constantly seeking ways to provide my clients with the most effective and comprehensive treatments. Following a thorough assessment to identify contraindications, one technique I’ve found incredibly valuable is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD). While many associate massage with muscle work, incorporating MLD allows me to address a crucial aspect of overall health: the lymphatic system.
Why? The lymphatic system is a network of vessels that plays a vital role in your body’s fluid balance, waste removal, and immune function. Lymph, a clear fluid, circulates through these vessels, collecting cellular debris, toxins, and excess fluid. By using gentle, rhythmic movements unique to MLD, I can stimulate this flow, promoting drainage and detoxification.
How MLD Enhances Your Massage Experience:

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) techniques enhance and complement traditional massage
* Reducing Swelling and Edema: MLD can effectively reduce fluid retention and swelling, especially for clients experiencing post-surgical edema, injuries, or chronic conditions.
* Supporting Detoxification and Immunity: MLD aids in the removal of metabolic waste and toxins, which supports your immune system. This is especially helpful for clients experiencing fatigue, sluggishness, or frequent illnesses.
* Alleviating Pain: By reducing inflammation and fluid accumulation, MLD – combined with targeted muscular work – contributes to pain relief. This is especially relevant for clients with chronic pain conditions or those recovering from injuries.
* Improving Skin Health: Enhanced lymphatic circulation promotes cellular regeneration and nutrient delivery, resulting in healthier skin.
* Promoting Deep Relaxation: The gentle, rhythmic nature of MLD has a calming effect on the nervous system, promoting deep relaxation. This complements the stress-reducing benefits of traditional massage, leading to a more profound sense of well-being.
* Supporting Pre- and Post-Surgical Recovery: MLD before and after surgeries can minimize swelling, reduce pain, and promote faster healing. A pre-surgical MLD session prepares your body for the stress of surgery, and post-surgical MLD helps manage edema and scar tissue formation.
My Approach:
As an RMT certified in MLD, I use light pressure and slow, repetitive movements, focusing on specific lymphatic pathways. MLD can be added to a regular massage session or offered as a standalone treatment at no extra cost. Just let me know you’d like to try it!
By understanding the benefits of MLD and incorporating it into my practice, I can provide my clients with a truly holistic approach to health and wellness.
